RAWThumbnail: A ROX-Filer helper to generate thumbnails for the Digital RAW files

Jean-Pierre Bucciol

Since December 3, 2007

1  What is RAWThumbnail

RAWThumbnail is a ROX-Filer helper to generate thumbnails for the Digital RAW files coming from digital cameras. It needs the external applications dcraw (or ufraw or other RAW converters which install dcraw) to work. Basically, RAWThumbnail with dcraw extract the thumbnail embedded in the RAW file. RAWThumbnail takes also care of the orientation of the picture if the external application exiv2 is present. It needs also ROX-Filer (surprise ?) and the ROX-Lib2 library.

This is GPL free Software. See the COPYING file included.

Note: Versions 1.0.3 and before needed the exiv2 application only to work, but worked with Canon, Sony and Fuji RAW files only. Since version 1.1, RAWThumbnail needs dcraw, but works for almost all brand RAW files: Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Sigma, Leica, DNG, etc. Give it a try.

3  Installation

  1. Check if the ROX-Lib2 library, dcraw and the exiv2 applications are installed on your system.
  2. Untar the archive. Use a ROX application or the command line:
    tar xzf RAWThumbnail-$version.tar.gz
  3. Copy the Application where you usually store ROX applications (usually /usr/apps; you may need to be root). Use ROX-Filer or the command line:
    cp -a RAWThumbnail /usr/apps
  4. As a normal user, open with ROX-Filer the directory where you stored the Application, and click on the Application icon:

  5. Click on the install boxes if needed, then the OK button:

You may also need to clear the thumbnail cache and restart ROX.

  6. Enjoy.
